Facilities Management is responsible for the planning, development, engineering, construction, operation, maintenance and stewardship of all the buildings, infrastructure, sites and services within Western’s campus community. FM departments include the AVP’s office, Facilities Development & Engineering, Power Plant, Business Operations, Sustainability, Building Services, Facilities Operations and Parking & Visitor Services. Our integrated team provides exceptional service in creating and maintaining Western’s facilities and in serving the community.
 

Responsibilities

The Human Resources Coordinator will be responsible for carrying out a broad range of staff related functions within the human resources practice to assist in achieving the human resources goals of Facilities Management, while contributing to the consistent application of human resources practices across Western University.  The role will facilitate the implementation of policies and processes, as well as build relationships with staff, leaders, and administrators within FM.  The Human Resources Coordinator provides support and acts as a resource to the FM HR team, leaders and staff relating to recruitment and onboarding processes, leaves management, employee relations matters, and the interpretation and utilization of collective agreements for the various unions and employee groups represented in the unit.   

Qualifications

Education:

  • Undergraduate degree in Business, Human Resources, Labour Relations, or a related field
  • Human Resource professional designation (completed or working towards) is preferred
  • Professional courses in conflict resolution preferred 

Experience:

  • 3 years of progressive experience working in a complex HR environment, including human resources administration and recruitment
  • Experience working in a unionized environment is preferred 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • In-depth knowledge of Human Resources statute, principles and practices and of the Employment Standards Act, and other relevant legislation
  • Well-defined sense of diplomacy, including conflict resolution, interpersonal, and people management skills.
  • Ability to combine HR expertise with overall business acumen 
  • Ability to understand client needs and expectations and provide excellent service-level directly and indirectly to satisfy expectations.
  • Discretion, tact, and maturity to deal with highly confidential subjects or issues.
  • Possesses a reputation for resourcefulness with a strong sense of accountability and initiative.
  • Intermediate computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) and with human resources information systems (such as PeopleSoft).
  • Demonstrated ability to evolve knowledge and professional development to adapt to ongoing changes in industry and workforce climate.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and confidence dealing with all levels of an organization.
  • Detail-oriented with an ability to function and process information with high levels of accuracy.
  • Ability to establish and build healthy working relations and partnerships with diverse community of staff, peers, union leaders, and external parties using excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to remain resilient, calm, work well under pressure, and use good judgment in assessing difficult situations.
  • Critical thinking abilities to evaluate issues from a strategic and operational perspective.
  • Demonstrated ability to research/investigate issues and resolve problems
  • Creative problem-solving skills, investigative abilities, and sound professional judgement, especially regarding confidential/sensitive matters. 
  • Proven ability to take initiative and champion a project from conception through implementation and evaluation.
  • Ability to handle diverse and emotional situations to achieve outcomes in line with values and best practices.
  • Ability to work under pressure and balancing multiple projects, each having their own timelines and constraints.
  • Ability to evaluate issues, recognize potential problems, and take action to proactively resolve issues.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development with a desire to take on new challenges
  • Familiarity with University policies and procedures preferred
