Unit overview
The Western Communications team provides strategic advice to university senior leadership, faculty, staff and teams of internal and external communications staff across Western in order to build the university’s brand on a local, national and global scale.
Responsibilities
Reporting to the Director, Media Relations, the Media Relations Coordinator will support the development and execution of proactive media relations strategies that strengthen Western’s reputation and increase its share of media coverage. The Coordinator will support media training initiatives, maintain expert lists, assist with media events, write community-focused Western News stories and help advance stories that align with Western’s strategic communications priorities.
The role will monitor daily media activity, curate and share key coverage, and share media coverage on social media. The Coordinator will also maintain and update media relations web content, collaborate with communications colleagues across campus, and ensure timely, accurate responses to media inquiries. In addition, the individual will contribute to issues management by researching background information and preparing materials that support informed, strategic responses.
Ideal candidate
The ideal candidate will have an undergraduate degree in communications, journalism/media, marketing or a related field, with a minimum of one year of experience in communications or marketing, ideally with exposure to media relations.
The candidate will have strong attention to detail, excellent writing and editing skills, and familiarity with media relations best practices, analytics, and social media platforms. They will be comfortable collaborating with stakeholders at all levels, building relationships with journalists, and applying creativity to support engagement initiatives. Highly organized and resourceful, the ideal candidate will be able to manage multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment. Experience in a postsecondary setting is considered an asset.

Please note, this is a 20-month, temporary full-time contract opportunity with a benefits package. The base salary will be $62,480 - $73,460 per annum. Starting salary will be aligned with the successful candidate’s experience, skills, and demonstrated qualifications.
