Job Description

The Wind Engineering, Energy and Environment (WindEEE) Research Institutes’ mission is to make global contributions in building resilient and sustainable communities through multidisciplinary wind research, education and innovation.
 
The WindEEE Dome, the world's first hexagonal wind tunnel, represents a technological breakthrough in the study of wind-related phenomena as it has the capability of physically simulating high intensity wind systems including; tornados, downbursts, gust fronts or low-level nocturnal currents; that cannot be created in any of the existing wind tunnels. The WindEEE Dome is a one of a kind, world class, 3D wind testing facility located off Western University's campus at the Advanced Manufacturing Park, located in South East London, Ontario.
 
The Research Engineer will be responsible for planning, executing and evaluating wind tunnel projects, in collaboration, at the WindEEE Research Institute and will manage the logistics and technical quality of the projects.  The incumbent will apply their expertise and knowledge to the design, development and modification of models, equipment, tools or other parts as required, to support projects and the Research Institute. 
 
The Research Engineer will be responsible for coordinating projects, ensuring projects remain within their budget, and for communicating with clients.  The incumbent will provide support and guidance to staff regarding project design, as well as approaches to utilizing required equipment and tools to ensure timely, innovative research project outcomes are achieved. The Research Engineer will leverage opportunities to enhance the technical capability of the WindEEE Research Institute through marketing initiatives and development of new areas of research.
 
Qualifications
Education:
-   Bachelor of Engineering Science in Aerodynamics or Structural Engineering disciplines
-   Masters in a Wind Engineering related discipline is preferred
-   Professional Engineer (PEng) registered in Canada and membership(s) in Professional Societies is preferred
 
Experience:
-   2 years' work experience with wind tunnel projects and with flow field measurements
-   Experience in a research environment planning, preparing and executing wind tunnel tests and managing projects
-   Experience with wind engineering and fluid mechanics analysis methodologies is preferred
 
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
-   In-depth knowledge of techniques for planning, managing and coordinating multiple projects, with competing priorities that involve a variety of stakeholders
-   Demonstrated ability to perform wind engineering related research
-   Knowledge of wind tunnel methodology and overall technical ability in flow field measurements (utilizing cobra probes, pressure scanners, particle image velocimetry (PIV); field–light detection and ranging (LiDAR), weather mast) and associated test setup engineering; ability to complete model design and test preparations
-   Familiarity with University research policies and practices
-   Demonstrated ability to analyze and synthesize sizable amounts of detail and data to prepare reports
-   Demonstrated ability to research/investigate issues and resolve problems with a sense of urgency in resolving issues and getting tasks completed
-   Ability to write clear, concise and accurate reports and procedural documentation
-   Ability to understand customer needs and expectations and provide excellent customer service to directly and indirectly satisfy expectations
-   Proven ability and natural inclination to develop relationships by interacting with clients, peers, internal and external stakeholders in a professional, respectful and diplomatic manner
-   Project management skills to manage multiple projects simultaneously from conception to completion within tightly prescribed timelines
-   Ability to support the implementation of creative and cost effective marketing strategies
-   Strong oral and written communication skills with an emphasis on proposal development and presentation to clients and management
-   Ability to handle details with a high degree of accuracy and to organize and prioritize a high volume of work to meet deadlines
-   Ability to work independently and effectively as a member of the team to achieve department goals
-   Ability to provide leadership, guidance, support and feedback in a way that is positively received
-   Ability to delegate work and provide team members with clear direction and support in meeting their objectives
-   Self-driven, independent thinker who is highly motivated and possesses an intrinsic passion for quality outcomes
-   Intermediate computer skills using Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project) and using CAD/CAM and MATLAB software
-   Ability to adhere to legislated safety requirements and Western safety policies
-   Must have own transportation with ability to travel between Western Engineering and WindEEE Research Institute facility; Valid Class G driver’s license required
