Laboratory Services is seeking a highly motivated, self-starter to provide a wide range of timely support services to 400+ users.  Under the guidance of the Manager, Information Technology, Laboratory Services Division, the incumbent will be responsible for the provision of a broad range of computing, networking and telecommunications support services, across multiple ISO registered sites.  All incoming issues will be reviewed, assigned priority and resolved/escalated following an established protocol. Through face-to-face, telephone, and email interaction, staff and clients will be assisted with IT-related problems (i.e. computer, networking, email, printer, scanner, desk/cell phone, LabVantage, Microsoft Suite, etc.) and will receive follow-up contact to ensure satisfactory resolution.

This position is the first point of contact to IT support within Laboratory Services providing computer expertise and technical support to staff and clients including: identifying and resolving network connectivity issues, creating and managing computer and user accounts, co-ordinate, install, and upgrade both networked and non-networked computer systems, and assist with interfacing of instrumentation computers to the LIMS for automated data retrieval and delivery using required interfaces to clients, monitoring and maintaining server backups, working with the Senior Network Administrator building, upgrading, configuring, and installing servers spanning several different platforms and configurations; performing basic monitoring, troubleshooting and repairing all aspects of servers, operating systems and hardware; responding to impacting events and performing routine maintenance activities on server environments.

Requirements of the position include:

  • Two year college diploma in computer engineering technology or computer system technology and two years relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Microsoft A+ certification, MCP, MCSE, OCP and Novell CNA is preferred
  • Additional industry certifications or designations are desirable (i.e. Redhat certified systems administrator (RHCSA), VMware VCP virtualization and Microsoft MCITP or MCSA enterprise administration on Windows Server
  • Strong knowledge of server operating systems including Microsoft Windows, Novell, Redhat Linux and VMware
  • Experience and understanding of storage principles including troubleshooting SAN technology and operating system disk management; knowledge and experience of file systems and the ability to perform data recovery
  • Basic knowledge of network protocols, principles, and concepts including the ability to troubleshoot local connectivity issues; ability to follow defined operational standards, understand a laboratory infrastructure and server operating systems
  • Strong communication skills (verbal and written) as well as professional phone etiquette
  • Demonstrated ability manage tasks under stress, work independently, to prioritize work in a fast paced, high pressure environment

Hours of work will be: 35 hours/week, Monday–Friday 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM, or as determined by organizational requirements, with occasional scheduled or emergency overtime (including weekends).

Normal Hiring Range        $23.31 - $26.04 per hour
