Job Description

JOB SUMMARY

The Service Technician is responsible for the complete servicing, proper use, clean up and promoting of all equipment owned by, contracted to, or handled by GAL Power Systems.  They will provide the highest quality of customer service, to enhance GAL’s corporate image and reputation, thereby promoting growth.  

The Service Technicians are required to abide by the company’s health and safety policy and manual.  They will also perform other assignments as required by management.
 

In addition to Kitchener-Waterloo, this position services Cambridge, London, Windsor, Sarnia, Hamilton, Stoney Creek, etc., as well as the GTA.

The position will reside where the successful candidate is located.


JOB DUTIES

Maintain and repair customer generator systems to ensure reliable and trouble free operations as required by the Service Manager by:

1.    Performing preventative maintenance inspections on power generator systems.
  • Follow complete checklist requirements and making recommendations to correct defects.
  • Ensure that the power generator systems comply with all appropriate codes and standards.

2.    Performing major and minor repairs to various engines, generators, control systems, and power switching equipment.
  • Carry out repairs once approval is received and signed off by the customer.

3.    Trouble shooting by testing complete system to ensure that the proper problem is identified.  
  • Repair and/or replace piece(s) as required.
  • Analyze system from end to start of the process, repair and/or replace defective parts, and test.  If problem is not resolved, continue the process until failure is identified and corrected.

4.    Retrofitting older equipment with newer technology subject to customer’s approval.  
  • Carry out plumbing repairs and modifications to fuel and exhaust systems. 
  • Make recommendations on repairs, modifications, and replacement of equipment to customers. 
  • Provide GAL office with information required for quoting purposes.
  • Provide GAL sales office with leads in rentals or replacement of equipment.
  • Filtering fuel as required.

5.    Carrying out start-up inspection of new or rebuilt equipment installations by:
  • Following start-up checklist procedure.
  • Providing instruction for operation and maintenance of equipment to the onsite customer.
  • Performing on site load tests to ensure systems are running properly.

6.    Ensuring proper in house maintenance is performed on vehicles, work shop, yard, shop equipment and tools.    
                
7.     Provide a safe, clean, and cost effective work place by:
  • Communicating with the Service Coordinator and/or Service Manager for any maintenance requirements or issues for action.
  • Cleaning and maintaining Company equipment, tools and shop.
  • Stocking required vehicle inventory by following the vehicle inventory checklist.
  • Making recommendations to Management of any ideas that you believe will improve the work area. 

8.     Completing all required administrative work order documentation to ensure costs are correctly allocated and customer information is captured by:
  • Properly and clearly completing work orders, time sheets, inspection check sheets, and data forms daily. 
  • Completing expense reports weekly.

9.    Promoting GAL Power Systems to existing and new customers ensuring increased growth potential by:
  • Listening carefully to customer needs and addressing their concerns. 
  • Building relationships to encourage repeat business.
  • Representing GAL Power Systems in a professional manner at all times, by ensuring uniform, vehicle and job sites are kept clean.
  • Being polite and treating everyone with respect and dignity. 
  • Recognizing potential revenue opportunities, make recommendations to the sales, rental or Service Manager as required.
  • Assisting office staff with quotations as required.

10.    Picking up and delivering order parts and materials as required.

11.    Starting up, repairing and maintaining all rental equipment operating by GAL Power. 

12.    Advising the Service Manager when jobs are completed before moving on to a new assignment.

13.    Attending training courses provided for by the Company.

14.    Load testing units.


WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT

Service technicians will be expected at times to work in special conditions, including work environments where there is a potential for high noise level, heat, dirt and hazardous conditions.

Provide “On Call” services to customers ensuring emergency situations are responded to immediately by:
a.    Being readily available for scheduled “on call” status. 
b.    Determine course of action required and follow through with customer’s approval.


JOB SPECIFICATIONS

Education:  
  • Minimum High school or equivalent

Training:       
  • Courses in generator use, mechanics, and/or electrical would be a definite asset. 
  • CHP (Combined Heat Power) training and/or experience considered a definite asset.
