Leading the Grand’s fund development strategy & activity in the areas of individual giving, planned giving, endowment funds and private foundations, the Director of Development is responsible for donor relations. You will be the key contact with current donors, prospect and engage new donors and actively build donor relationships with the Grand. In this role, you will develop and implement strategies to support these activities and to achieve annual revenue targets. You will also provide support to the Grand’s business partnerships, special events and public revenue (grant) funding opportunities.

About the Role
This senior leadership role reports directly to the Executive Director and collaborates closely with the Artistic Director, the Director of Business Relationships & Events, the Director of Marketing, and other members of the senior leadership team. This role is highly self-directed, and is supported by a Development Coordinator, shared with the Director of Business Partnerships & Events.

This is a full-time, ongoing position working in predominantly in-person work environment. 

Work hours are a blend of weekday/daytime, evening & weekends based on event & activity requirements – attendance is expected at opening nights and donor events.

The role is based in London, Ontario, and a residency (or ability to relocate to) London is required. A relocation stipend is available.

The salary range is between $70-90,000 per year, commensurate to experience. The Grand Theatre has a generous benefits plan.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Fund Development (70%)
  • Nurture relationships with current & potential donors, leading to growth of our donor base;
  • Lead the planning, management, actioning and evaluation of individual giving, major gifts, planned gifts, endowment funds & related programs;
  • Actively steward donors and ensure and oversee the development and implementation of donor loyalty initiatives;
  • Set and achieve ambitious annual & campaign revenue targets for annual donors, major donors, capital fundraising, planned giving, endowment funds, and private foundations; including establishing a clear work plan, and establishing metrics for success;
  • Leverage key relationships and contacts towards growth of raised funds;
  • Effectively communicate compelling and persuasive presentations of programming & strategies, to secure gifts
  • Establish and maintain best practices in gift processing, data management and donor communications;
Donor Events (15%)
  • Lead on Donor stewardship & engagement events, including special events geared to our Directors’ Circle patrons and significant donors;
  • Engage theatre patrons, internal stakeholders and the community to attend and support special events;
  • With the Director of Business Relationships & Events, and the volunteer Gala Committee, lead the Grand’s annual signature event, the Grand Gala, through effective coordination, delegation to supporting staff leads, and engaging with the committee.
  • Work closely with the Gala Coordinator, Development Team and Gala Committee to implement strategies for increased Gala attendance and revenue;
  • Oversee the development and implementation of strategies for increased attendance and revenue at donor events;
  • Set and achieve revenue targets for special events;
  • Engage theatre patrons, internal stakeholders and the community to attend and support the Gala;
Foundations, Grants & Other Support (10%)
  • Research and prepare requests to Private Foundations for support of Grand Theatre programs;
  • Support the writing of grants and submissions to public funders for support;
  • Lead & engage with the Grand’s Fund Development Committee to garner increased support;
  • Collaborate with the Director of Business Partnerships & Events on support to business relationships and special events;
  • Collaborate with senior leaders to action community engagement & outreach opportunities.
Leadership/Management (5%)
  • With the Director of Business Relationships & Events, hire, mentor and supervise development staff;
  • Develop and implement strategies to achieve organizational fundraising objectives;
  • Develop and manage department budgets;
  • Ongoing evaluation of development programs and activities;
  • Create and implement annual Development Plan;
  • Manage personnel issues, including recruitment, professional development and performance evaluations;
  • Assist other departments within the organization as necessary and appropriate;
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications & Competencies
  • A strong background (5+ years) in fund development (preferably within an arts environment; professional designation an asset);
  • Able to demonstrate skill at building strong and lasting relationships;
  • Has a proven track record at achieving results & targets;
  • An expert in donor stewardship, with prior experience maintaining/fostering donor relationships at all levels;
  • Understands how to provide meticulous customer service to donors;
  • Is a strategic thinker, with experience setting/realizing an ambitious fundraising strategy & plan;
  • Has demonstrated success at building and delivering on previous plans;
  • Is a strong communicator, with a keen sense of purpose, a tactful approach and supremely efficient; 
  • Understands the value the Grand plays in our community, appreciates the theatrical art form, and is passionate about ensuring the Grand’s long-term success and support;
  • Ambitious with high energy;
  • Experienced at motivating and supervising a team;
  • Takes a meticulous approach to planning, budgeting and analysis;
  • All new hires will be subject to the following conditions of employment:
    • Must be able to legally work in Canada;
    • All staff are required to be fully vaccinated (2 doses) against COVID-19 prior to the start of employment and are required to provide the Grand Theatre with proof of vaccination;
    • Must provide a recent and clear police information check
