Job Description

YOUTH ENGAGEMENT LEAD (TOBACCO)

Length: Temporary Full-time (for up to 15 months)

Hours of Work: 35 hours per week

Wage: $33.68 – $38.28 per hour

Location: 150 Main St., Cambridge

Description of Duties:

Coordinates the youth volunteer group (Youth Engagement Leaders) program, including volunteer program administration to raise public awareness of tobacco control and healthy living issues relevant to youth and young adults; develops partnerships with community groups, PH staff, and the Tobacco Control Area Network to provide opportunities for youth in accordance with the Smoke-Free Ontario Strategy, and consistent with the vision, mission, values and strategic directions of Region of Waterloo Public Health.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:

 
  • Knowledge of health promotion theory and practice; project management; consultation; developing and designing youth related tobacco topics; best practices in tobacco use prevention; and advocacy acquired through a 4-year University Degree in Health Sciences, Social Sciences or related field, plus 3 years of combined related experience in tobacco control and working with youth.
 
  • Knowledge of Smoke-Free Ontario strategy/legislation.
 
  • Ability to apply core principles of youth engagement to assignments. Knowledge of volunteer administration practices and youth engagement principles.
 
  • Analytical, problem solving, and organizational skills to find, interpret and verify information; identify problems and their causes; and generate workable solutions.
 
  • Human relations, leadership, and communication skills in order to advise, motivate, and facilitate learning for youth volunteers. Ability to provide consultation, ongoing support and promote best practices to staff regarding youth engagement. Ability to participate as an effective team member within an interdisciplinary health setting, and with community members of various backgrounds and cultures.
 
  • Computer skills with ability to use software such as MSWord, Excel; a document management software program (DOCS); the Internet/Intranet; and volunteer tracking software (e.g., Volgistics).
 
  • Must provide an acceptable Police Records Check in order to ensure suitability for working with vulnerable populations.
 
  • Ability to read and understand data and literature from various sources to provide input into reports, documents, and proposals. Ability to proofread and edit youth created resources.
 
  • Ability to write clear, concise memos, letters, recommendations, and reports.
 
  • Ability to communicate, educate, and express ideas and technical information clearly and concisely to youth, the public, staff, TCAN, and community groups, to further program objectives (determine areas of interest, collaborate on projects, promote youth engagement, build relationships). Ability to assist youth in developing resources with meaningful, accurate information and clear messaging, including thought to the target population or comprehension level and corporate standards. Makes presentations to divisional staff regarding youth program.
 
  • Ability to travel to various locations within and outside Waterloo Region.
 
  • Ability to support and project values compatible with the organization.
