Job Description

Grand Erie District School Board represents more than 28,000 students in 58 elementary schools and 14 secondary schools within the City of Brantford and the counties of Brant, Haldimand and Norfolk, as well as students from Six Nations of the Grand River First Nation and Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation.  With a dedicated staff of more than 2,900, Grand Erie Is committed to learning, leading and Inspiring.  The Education Centre Is located In Brantford.

Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Energy & Sustainability Officer, the Energy & Sustainability Summer Student will be responsible for assisting in the development and implementation of projects related to energy conservation, waste diversion, water conservation, grounds greening, climate change action, staff and student engagement and awareness building, and reporting. In addition, the Summer Student will:
  • Assist with auditing the environmental impact of various operational processes, create summary reports, and research and summarize alternative best practices. 
  • Assist the Energy and Sustainability Officer to ensure compliance and management of drinking water systems.
  • Support the on-going efforts to manage the board's water monitoring program.
  • Assist with the Board’s recycling programs, waste audits and waste reductions plans in compliance with Ministry regulations.
  • Assist with the monitoring, tracking and verifying of utility purchase and performance of Board facilities. Support the maintenance of the utility databases and prepare energy reports.
  • Develop resources to support and encourage staff and student engagement related to environmental sustainability.  
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
  • Currently enrolled in, or a recent graduate from a secondary school program related to environmental sustainability, environmental science, or other related discipline.
  • Familiar with industry best practices related to energy, waste, water, and other focus areas of sustainability.
  • Competency in the use of Microsoft Office software.
  • Capacity to learn how to use web-based software applications for utility tracking and specialized facility management information systems.
  • Basic knowledge of electrical, plumbing, and HVAC systems is an asset.
  • Experience with or awareness of EcoSchools Canada program is an asset.
  • A Class G license and access to a personal vehicle is an asset but not required.
  • Ability to work independently.
 
Job Specifications
Hours of Work Monday to Friday, 35 hours per week
Rate of Pay $15.50 to $16.55 per hour plus 4% vacation pay.
Effective Date May 6, 2024 – August 30, 2024
