Planning Officer
Grand Erie District School Board represents more than 28,000 students in 58 elementary schools and 14 secondary schools within the City of Brantford and the counties of Brant, Haldimand and Norfolk, as well as students from Six Nations of the Grand River First Nation and Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation. Reporting to the Planning Supervisor, the Planning Officer plays a key role in the development of short and long-term plans for student accommodation. This can include: monitoring current enrolment, projecting future enrolment, reviewing residential developments, Municipal Planning documents and their potential impact on Grand Erie facilities, monitoring facility utilization, undertaking capital planning initiatives, preparing business cases for construction of new schools and school additions, maintaining and updating Grand Erie’s Long Term Accommodation Plan (LTAP), completing plan studies and using various planning methodologies to provide optimum learning environment for student achievement compliant with Board policies and procedures.


Responsibilities:
  • Prepare and maintain student enrolment projections using a combination of historical data, local school age population and development data.
  • Prepare various reports and maps utilizing the Board’s GIS.
  • Maintain elementary staffing software system and data.
  • Prepare various reports and data.
  • Prepare business cases for the construction of new schools and school additions.
  • Participation in School Accommodation Reviews and Boundary Reviews.
  • Review and comment on municipal development applications, zoning by-laws, official plans etc.
  • Maintain and update the Board’s LTAP.
  • Liaise with various stakeholders including but not limited to parents, administrators, municipal staff and members of the development industry.
  • Monitor new residential development within municipalities of Grand Erie and maintain the corresponding databases.
  • Prepare staff reports for presentation to the Board, Executive Council, committees or public members.
  • Assists with the implementation of new Ministry policy directives.
  • Other duties as assigned
     

Qualifications:
  • Candidates must have completed a relevant University Degree in Planning, Geography or equivalent and have a minimum two years of experience in an equivalent role.
  • Strong customer service focus with an equally strong work ethic with the ability to prioritize and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent organizational, superior interpersonal and communication skills are required with a combined attention to detail and accuracy. 
  • Ability to be professional and handle confidential information with tact and discretion.
  • Can work in a team environment but are also self-directed and can work independently with minimum supervision.
  • Computer proficient in a variety of software applications, including Geographic Information Systems (ArcGIS), Student Transportation routing software (BusPlanner), Adobe Suite, student enrolment projection software, and Microsoft Office.
  • Membership (or eligibility to obtain membership) in the Ontario Professional Planners Institute/Canadian Institute of Planning is an asset.
  • Must be able to work outside of normal business hours as required; and the ability to travel to various sites within Grand Erie’s jurisdiction and occasionally beyond.
 
Job Specifications
Hours of Work 7 hours per day/35 hours per week
Rate of Pay Hiring Range $76,754 – $84,604
Salary Range $76,754 – $87,221
