Laboratory Technician

Bacteriology, Animal Health Laboratory, Laboratory Services Division

Temporary full-time from November 2014 to September 7, 2015

The successful candidate will perform a number of duties in the AHL Bacteriology laboratory, including receipt and log-in of samples into a computerized laboratory tracking system; preparation and examination of primary bacterial cultures for the isolation and identification of bacterial and fungal pathogens by morphological, biochemical, serological and microscopic characteristics in accordance with standard operating procedures (SOPs); performing appropriate antimicrobial susceptibility tests; preparation of diagnostic reagents; maintaining records; maintaining lab equipment; participation in quality assurance of laboratory procedures; inventory control; processing samples according to Ontario Hatchery and Supply Flock Policy (OHSFP) requirements; performing nucleic acid extraction; performing conventional and real time PCR; interpretation and reporting of molecular test results; assisting the preparation of monthly and annual reports and special reports and summaries; and other duties as assigned.  

Requirements of the position include: Three year Community College diploma in laboratory technology or a relevant field of study, plus one year related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.  Certification as a Medical Laboratory Technologist preferred, as well as experience in veterinary diagnostic mastitis bacteriology and molecular biology techniques.  Additional requirements include: excellent verbal and written communication skills; excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills in order to work effectively with clients, co-workers, and students; basic computer and microcomputer skills; and working knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety and WHIMIS legislation in a laboratory environment. Must be, or willing to be, rabies vaccinated.

Individual must be able to work 5 days per week (Monday to Friday and/or Tuesday to Saturday), 7 hours per day.
