As part of the Student Experience portfolio, the Learning Development & Success team offers resources and supports to all students at Western. Team members help students cope with the demands of post-secondary learning, helping to identify strengths and develop new skills and strategies for success. We also work with students to alleviate academic stress and anxiety, and to develop positive motivation and confidence toward learning. Our supports are valuable for successful students wanting to maintain their already strong skills and those having academic difficulties.

Responsibilities
Working in a confidential setting, and from a student centred focus, the Student Learning Development Specialist will provide guidance and support to students related to their learning needs in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics disciplines. The role will guide and establish goals and objectives with students in a manner which reflects current theories of learning and processes, emphasizing the significance of developing effective learning skills. The role will provide support via email, telephone, in-person, and
electronically for primarily one-on-one sessions with students, which are responsive to the unique learning skills and challenges of Students with Disabilities, Mature Students, Indigenous Students, International Students and ESL Students. The role will work in collaboration to create information resources to assist students, and will provide referrals to other relevant university services when necessary. The role will also coordinate the Peer Assisted Learning Centre and its services.

Qualifications

Education:
- Undergraduate Degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics related field
- Bachelor of Education: Intermediate/Senior (designation in Math and/or Science) preferred
- Masters in a Math or Science focused discipline would be an asset

Experience:
- Two years’ experience providing guidance and support to students in regards to learning development and
related strategies, preferably in postsecondary institution, with a STEM focus

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Demonstrated skill and ability in guiding and working with students of diverse life and educational backgrounds and skill levels
- Demonstrated advanced knowledge and skill level in learning skills development, empathy, problem solving and learning strategies
- Effective listening, observation and facilitation skills to effectively assess students needs and provide appropriate services
- Strong collaboration skills to manage service delivery in conjunction with Learning Development & Success team members and other available services on campus
- Strong organizational skills to effectively plan and manage priorities to achieve results independently and as a member of the team
- Proven ability to exercise a high level of initiative and independent judgement
- Thorough understanding of university level academic demands
- Demonstrated oral and written communication skills, including strong presentation skills
- Well-established and demonstrated interpersonal and relationship building skills
- Intermediate computer skills including creative presentation design, word processing and database management (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Demonstrated commitment to ongoing learning and professional development
