About Us
University Machine Services (UMS) is an ancillary service located in the Thompson Engineering Building at Western University. UMS provides assistance in instruction, research, and industry through the design and manufacture of specialized components and equipment. UMS is equipped with a wide range of conventional, Computer Automated machine tools and Additive manufacturing, is staffed by dedicated trades and technical employees. UMS is capable of producing a wide variety of products and equipment.

Responsibilities
The Technical Specialist (Project Manager) will apply their expertise and knowledge to the design, development, modification, maintenance and manufacturing of equipment, tools or other parts required to support research, projects, laboratories or other campus settings and various external stakeholders at University Machine Services. The role will be responsible for setting up, installing and maintaining equipment, completing upgrades, and providing training and hands-on technical expertise regarding equipment and
instrumentation. The Project Manager will manage the development of project plans, support the design, implementation and evaluation of the project components, prepare project status reports for stakeholders, and manage financial information. The role will also provide supervision, support and guidance to staff and students regarding project design, and on approaches to utilizing required equipment and tools to ensure timely, innovative and reliable research and project outcomes are achieved.

Qualifications

Education:
- Diploma or Trades/Vocational certificate in a related field
- Completed apprenticeship relevant to the role (machinist, millwright, toolmaker, or mould maker) with a Certificate of Qualification
- Bachelor's Degree in Engineering preferred
- Project Management Professional Certificaton completed or in progress preferred

Experience:
- 5 years' (post-apprenticeship) working experience in a machining, manufacturing, research and development/prototyping environment, or laboratory setting
- Experience supervising staff and projects in a manufacturing setting
- Design experience preferred

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Knowledge of a variety of mechanical trades (welding, electrical, hydraulics, plumbing, machining)
- Ability to program, operate and maintain Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC) machining/turning centres, rapid prototyping systems and/or with additive manufacturing equipment (e.g. fused deposition modelling)
- In-depth knowledge of manufacturing technology with the ability to read and understand blueprints and technical drawings
- Ability to ensure resources are within allotments, and to make appropriate modifications when required
- In-depth knowledge of techniques for planning, managing and coordinating projects, with competing priorities that involve a variety of stakeholders
- In-depth knowledge related to troubleshooting, diagnosis, and repair of mechanical, electrical, and/or electronic devices
- Project management skills to align projects with strategic goals and operational objectives, ensure team roles are clear, milestones are communicated, and deadlines are met
- Ability to collaborate across internal and external boundaries to meet common objectives, improve outcomes and support work beyond one's own unit
- Communication skills to describe technical concepts effectively to both novice and sophisticated users and with an ability to write clear, concise and accurate procedural documentation
- Detail-oriented with an ability to function and process information with high levels of accuracy
- Computer skills with the ability to learn and use relevant software, applications or equipment that achieves required outcomes for the facility, laboratory or project; Intermediate computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite
- Advanced computer skills with 3D computer-aided drafting, specifically Solid Modelling, using Solid Works,
Auto CAD and/or Auto Desk Inventor; with 3D-CNC programming using Computer Assisted Manufacturing software, such as HSM Works
- Excellent troubleshooting ability along with hands-on expertise in technical support
- Ability to provide guidance on the proper and safe use of materials and equipment
