Job Description

 Our client in Waterloo is currently seeking a Senior Mechanical Automation Designer and an Intermediate Mechanical Designer to join their team.

 

 The Senior Designer will be responsible for designs from concept to completion including contact with customers, suppliers and legislative bodies to ensure all aspects of projects are carried out in the appropriate manner to completion.

 You will be responsible to ensure that all design drawings for individual projects, for both internal and external subcontractors are completed according to the dates assigned while collaborating on joint projects & decisions. This includes identifying all parts or components required to be requisitioned which are not manufactured or stocked in-house. (i.e. laser cutting, feed screws, non-inventoried materials, etc.)

 Responsible for conducting measurements of parts and machinery at a customer’s plant or at their work station, to be incorporated into the design of products and parts. The measurements taken at a customer’s plant do require frequent travel to another country with notice being given in a short time. The instruments used for these measurements are verniers, micrometers, measuring rules, protractors, CMM (FARO ARM) laptop computer utilizing CAD SOLIDWORKS, trigonometric & mathematic calculations.

 Responsible for assisting in Internal QC Inspection for individual Jobs prior to release from Design to Mfg.

 Responsible for conducting and participating in pre-installation meetings. Also responsible for the documentation of machine functions within the project charter so functionality can be understood by the installation technicians.

In addition, you will have the following responsibilities:

1. Responsible for the mentoring and training of intermediate and junior design staff.

2. Possess the knowledge of systems, process and capabilities of the client and have the technical abilities to fill in for the Design Manager in his/her absence.

3. Responsible for developing of new products and technologies and possesses a very good understanding of mechanical machine function.

4. Able to generate training documents and provide hands-on and in class training as required.

 

Education and Experience:

Minimum 5 years, full time, Community College course in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent training.

It is preferred for the individual to have completed their CET or P. Eng. and have active membership in the OACETT or P. Eng Ontario or have a minimum 7yrs relevant work experience in the packaging or related industry.

3 to 5 years work experience or training in Mechanical Design utilizing Solid works or similar 3D design software.

Must be able to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, vendors and customers.

A valid passport and the ability to travel to the USA and other countries is a must have.

 

The Intermediate role has the following requirements:

 

A similar functional ability to the above senior position with the understanding that you would be growing into a more senior role. With the following criteria:

 

1. Responsible for the mentoring and training of junior design staff.

2. Responsible for developing and maintaining training guidelines for all design staff. Able to assist in generating training documents and provide hands-on and in class training as required.

3. Possess the knowledge of systems, process and capabilities of the client and have the technical abilities to fill in for the Design Manager in his/her absence. (May need assistance from senior level designer.)

4. Responsible for developing of new products and technologies with minimal assistance and guidance from others and possesses a very good understanding of mechanical machine function.

 

Education and Experience:

 Minimum 3 years, full time, Community College course in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent training. It is preferred for the individual to be working toward their CET or P. Eng.

 3 to 5 years work experience or training in Mechanical Design utilizing Solidworks or similar 3D design software.
