General Manager

by Covent Garden Market

Location: London, ON
Date Posted: Aug 05, 2021

Job Description

With its fresh produce, gourmet foods, public square, Outdoor Farmers’ Market, Rotary Ice Rink and regular family programming, Covent Garden Market continues to build on its long and rich traditions and heritage as one of London’s centres of commerce and community. Throughout the year, the Market offers a range of events on the public square and mezzanine, including music, festivals, and community events.

Established in 1845 and located in the heart of Downtown London, Covent Garden Market is open 6 days of the week offering an indoor market of over 50 unique merchants and services, 18 restaurants on site, and an outdoor farmer’s market with wonderfully fresh and local food.

In partnership with Prime Management Group Inc., Covent Garden Market is excited to be hiring for a creative, community-focused General Manager who will take an all-encompassing and proactive approach to overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Market. The General Manager will maintain a unique, vibrant, commercially viable shopping and gathering place for the local community, while astutely supporting and guiding the Market’s diversified and essential vendors in their individual business objectives.

As the “face” of the Market, the General Manager will be an energized, effective, and trusted relationship builder, with a sincere focus on cultivating strong community partnerships including civic officials. Additionally, this resourceful leader will stay current on the broader London business economy and will identify opportunities to creatively enhance the Market’s presence within the community.

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the General Manager will successfully lead, develop, and implement an annual strategic business plan that will promote and advance local people, products and programs, small business, agriculture, art, culture & community. In addition, the General Manager will be responsible for leading a small, high-performing and committed team responsible for facility and property management, leasing, financial management, as well as security and risk management functions.

About You

As an enthusiastic relationship builder, you have previously demonstrated a commitment to community by developing new business opportunities and creatively identifying new areas for growth. Your entrepreneurial mindset enables you to “think outside of the box,” with the “bigger picture” in mind as well as a sincere desire to make a positive impact for an organization, its people, and the community at large. Ideally, you have experience working within the Retail or Restaurant/Hospitality/Food sectors as it relates to the privately held vendors that will require your guidance and support.

As a hands-on, resourceful, and proactive leader, you have team management experience overseeing facility operational procedures, systems and controls, and assessing policies. In turn, you understand the importance of equipping others with the right tools and training to carry out their duties effectively and you lead with a sense of empathy, collaboration, and accountability.

Additionally, you have experience developing and executing an effective strategic business/marketing plan; financial management experience; and experience working with a variety of departments simultaneously. You also possess strong skills in conflict management, problem-solving, communication, and negotiation to effectively manage and navigate business nuances while building trusted vendor relationships and those with city council. You are also someone who appreciates and uses digital marketing tools such as social media to promote an organization’s brand with appropriate messaging and engage the public. In particular, you will have a strong understanding of the Downtown London area and have a deep appreciation for what the community represents and offers as a whole.
