Facilities Management is responsible for the planning, development, engineering, construction, operation, maintenance and stewardship of all the buildings, infrastructure, sites and services within Western’s campus community. As a member of the integrated leadership team for Facilities Management, the Manager, Power Plant Operations (Chief Engineer) provides strategic and tactical leadership in the development and execution of programs at Western’s Power Plant and contributes to Western’s resiliency planning by developing strategies that advance the long-term sustainability of the institution. The Plant is a First Class Plant rated at 23,082 KW, comprised of 5 high pressure steam boilers, 4 large water chillers, 4 high pressure air compressors and is registered under the Government of Ontario's Technical Safety Standards Authority. The Manager, Power Plant Operations is responsible for the safe, efficient and reliable operation and maintenance of the Central Power Plant along with the steam, condensate and chilled water distribution infrastructure (9 Satellite Cooling plants consisting of 16 water chillers and 5 hot water Heating Plants consisting of 15 hot water boilers, and associated equipment). The Central Power Plant is the hub of the heating and cooling systems for the University campus and also supplies essential service steam to London Health Sciences Centre’s University Hospital for all of their heating and sterilization requirements

Qualifications

Education:
- Completion of Power Engineering Diploma or equivalent
- Licensed First Class Power (Operating) Engineer
- Licensed Gas Technician is preferred

Experience:
- 10 years' experience managing the operation and maintenance of First Class Power Plants, Heating and Cooling Plants, providing steam, chilled water, compressed air and electrical power in an institutional environment.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Ability to evaluate issues, recognize potential problems and take action to proactively resolve issues
- Ability to ensure expenditures and resources are within allotments, and to make appropriate modifications when required
- Communication skills with the ability to converse with, write reports for, and deliver presentations to all levels of the organization
- Verbal communication skills to clearly express ideas in an objective manner, and adapt communication style to suit the situation and audience
- Project management skills to align multiple projects simultaneously with strategic goals and operational objectives, ensure team roles are clear, milestones are communicated, and deadlines are met
- Ability to provide solutions and ideas for improvement by using imaginative approaches where constructive thinking and innovation are required
- Organizational skills to manage multiple activities that are accurate and thorough, sometimes of a complex nature or involving competing priorities
- Professional manner, tact, diplomacy and discretion in dealing with various stakeholders and colleagues, including senior management
- Proven ability and natural inclination to develop relationships by interacting with people in a professional, respectful and diplomatic manner
