Facilities Technician

Waterloo North Hydro is a progressive electric distribution utility servicing the City of Waterloo, the Township of Wellesley and the Township of Woolwich. Our impressive team of 120 dedicated employees strives to provide a safe and reliable supply of electricity to 54,000 customers across a large urban and rural service area spanning 672 square km. Our focus is on service excellence from answering telephones to building, maintaining and operating the local power distribution system.

We are inviting applications for a competent team player with a strong mechanical aptitude, knowledge of basic electric circuit theory, and a clear interest in all aspects of building and property maintenance. Interested candidates must apply in writing to express their interest in the position, outlining their education, experience and related qualifications. The successful candidate will have the following minimum qualifications:

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills with demonstrated leadership skills and a commitment to safety, teamwork and co-operation.
• Ability to deal with contractors and fellow employees in a courteous and tactful manner.
• Demonstrated ability to work from verbal and written instructions; must be able to accurately interpret civil, electrical and mechanical drawings, technical manuals, specifications and reports.
• Demonstrated mechanical aptitude including proficiency in the use of tools and equipment associated with most building repairs and maintenance activities.
• Must have excellent problem solving skills and be adept at troubleshooting building systems related problems.
• Proficient in the use of personal computers, Computer Aided Design and Drafting (CADD) software, as well as word processing and spread sheet programs.
• Valid driver’s licence and excellent driving record. Applicant must be prepared to obtain a Class ‘DZ’ licence within one year and maintain it in good standing.
• Physical ability to work in either an inside or outside environment, operate equipment and perform work functions as required.
• Requires a 3 year community college diploma in one of the following disciplines: building science, architectural technology, construction technology, mechanical engineering or electrical engineering.
• Must have an intermediate knowledge of relevant codes and standards such as the Ontario Electrical Safety Code, the Ontario Building Code, Municipal bylaws and other codes and standards as they relate to WNH’s buildings and properties.
• Requires a minimum of 5 years related experience.
