Job Description

DENTAL HYGIENIST

Length:  Temporary Full-time (for up to 15 months)

Hours of Work:  35 hours per week                                                                            

Salary/Wage: $55,637.40 – $63,208.60 per annum/$30.57 – $34.73 per hour

Location:  99 Regina Street, S., Waterloo/150 Main Street, Cambridge

Description of Duties:

Provides dental hygiene services in the delivery of the dental health program, which aims to ensure that children and youth in the community have equal access to dental treatment and reduce the prevalence of dental diseases in children and youth, in accordance with the Health Protection and Promotion Act. Promotes oral health as a vital component of overall wellness to various groups and individuals in the community and to provide professional dental treatment for clients in the dental clinic.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities Required:

 
  • Must possess a diploma or degree in Dental Hygiene from an accredited post-secondary institution. Must be a registered dental hygienist through the College of Dental Hygienists of Ontario, with a self-initiation designation. Must have 1 year of experience in private practice. Must have basic cardiac and life support (CPR) certification.
 
  • A thorough understanding of federal, provincial, and municipal laws and regulations which pertain to public health, such as: the Health Protection and Promotion Act, WHMIS, Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, Dental Hygiene Practice Standards and Code of Ethics, Child and Family Services Act, and CINOT program regulations.
 
  • Follows the dental hygiene process including assessment of the client’s needs, formulation of dental hygiene services/program plan, implementation of the plan and subsequent evaluation of dental hygiene services/program as it relates to preventive, therapeutic, and ongoing services. Thorough knowledge and application of universal infection control procedures and ability to operate and maintain complex dental equipment.
 
  • Computer skills using Microsoft Word, with ability to use divisional systems (e.g., Oral Health Information Support System) and e-documentation.
 
  • Presentations and contact with parents and clients require negotiation skills, motivational techniques, tact, persuasion and sensitivity, in order to deal with personal, financial and health-related issues.
 
  • Ability to prepare detailed correspondence describing dental health concerns and treatment options for parents and to "translate" technical information, special vocabulary, and specific instructions for parents who have very limited English skills.  Ability to employ a variety of techniques in order to communicate effectively with multicultural clients. Ability to compose detailed correspondence for signature by Dental Consultant and the Medical Officer of Health, and submit reports and documentation involving descriptions and explanations of a moderately complex and legal nature to Family and Children's Services. These reports may be used in court to enforce dental treatment in cases involving neglect.
 
  • Ability to develop, implement, evaluate, and revise  programs, resources and activities for the public and to tailor health promotion presentations to suit various clients which may include: children, ESL classes, pre- and post-natal classes, seniors, and health care professionals. 
 
  • Ability to read and critically appraise dental journals and related health periodicals to maintain database of current scientific literature for PH staff.
 
  • Ability to travel to various locations within and outside of the Region.
 
  • Must provide an acceptable Police Records Check to ensure suitability for working with vulnerable populations.
 
  • Ability to support and project values compatible with the organization.
