The Department of Western Technology Services (WTS) is a central source committed to providing high-quality, cost-effective technology solutions and services to the campus community in support of the teaching and research missions of the University. WTS works collaboratively with other IT groups within Western’s faculties and support units to leverage central supported technology solutions and services where appropriate.

The Facilities Assistant (Telecom/Network) is responsible for providing support and assistance to the Western Technology Services Infrastructure (MAC) Group with the extensive cabling infrastructure across the Western University campus. The incumbent assists with installation, termination and testing of low voltage cabling, conducts cleaning, and implements minor repairs and preventative maintenance (under the supervision of a Telecomm/Network Technician) including adding equipment, routine cleaning, and organization of equipment closets across campus to ensure cleanliness and safety requirements are met. The Facilities Assistant updates various databases and departmental records and provides assistance to faculty and staff, answering general questions, or escalating to a member of the MAC Group, related to the cabling infrastructure as required.

Education:
-   1 year Community College diploma in Construction Management or relevant field

Experience:
-   2 years of experience working on construction sites with exposure to cabling
-   Experience providing maintenance and repair in a relevant environment
-   Experience with cable infrastructure integration is preferred
-   Experience providing customer service in a relevant environment is preferred

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
-   Familiarity with preventative maintenance techniques and practices and with blueprints and technical drawings
-   Verbal communication skills to clearly express ideas in an objective manner, and adapt communication style to suit the situation and audience with the ability to effectively interact with technical and non-technical users
-   Demonstrated ability take initiative, to work independently and follow through on work assignments
-   Ability to apply active listening to hear and understand the complete message being communicated
-   Ability to establish rapport with people from diverse backgrounds
-   Ability to maintain a positive, outgoing attitude with genuine customer service orientation
-   Ability to multi-task and maintain an organized and effective personal work environment
-   Adapts readily and effectively to changing priorities and demands
-   Ability to interact professionally with students, staff, faculty, and other members of the University community
-   Ability to work independently and effectively as a member of the team to achieve department goals
-   Computer skills with the ability to learn and use relevant software, applications or equipment that achieves required outcomes
-   Basic proficiency required in Microsoft Office in order to prepare email, correspondence, input departmental data in spreadsheets, other records systems
-   Familiarity with software applications used by Western preferred – e.g. e-mail, calendars
-   Ability and willingness to stay abreast of technological developments
-   Ability to lift, carry, move and position objects weighing up to 40 lbs using proper ergonomic procedures
-   Ability to work on ladders and elevated work platforms using proper safety precautions
