Chief Executive Officer
Biodiversity Institute of Ontario
Temporary full-time for approximately three (3) years

Located within the University of Guelph, the Biodiversity Institute of Ontario is a world leader in understanding the biodiversity of the planet. Based on genetic sequencing and the unique technology of genetic barcoding, the Institute is making huge advancements in how scientists, policymakers, and industry describe, define and understand biodiversity. It is at a time of great potential that and the Institute is hiring a new CEO.
The Chief Executive Officer will guide the Institute as it continues to lead the world in innovative biodiversity research. S/he will communicate and reinforce the role the Institute can play in the translation of biodiversity science into relevant, real world applications to benefit industry and all Canadians.
The CEO will be accountable for:
- leading the Institute’s dedicated management team
- liaising with government and industry to identify and develop commercialization opportunities
- working with stakeholders to develop and implement a new strategic plan
- ensuring the organization continues to prosper as it evolves into a hub of innovative products and technologies with real world applications.
The successful candidate will have an entrepreneurial spirit with an aptitude for finding commercial applications for ground-breaking scientific research. The CEO will be a strategic thinker with the proven ability to lead and direct staff towards accomplishing organizational goals and objectives. S/he will have superior stakeholder management skills and an understanding of the complexities of a multi-stakeholder environment. The CEO will have excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to manage a variety of personalities and be a skilled negotiator, facilitator, lobbyist and networker. S/he will be able to communicate their ideas in a clear and concise manner and be able to listen to and consider different points of view. Ideally the CEO should have an advanced degree in an area of study related to the research of the Institute or equivalent senior leadership experience in a related field.
