The Location
This position is a part of DSM Nutritional Products Canada Inc., a global leader in the supply of vitamins, carotenoids, enzymes and micropremixes to the animal feed and pet food industries.  The position is based in our Ayr, Ontario animal nutrition blend plant, located just 15 minutes by highway 401 from the Tri-cities area Kitchener-Cambridge-Waterloo.  The area has the appeal of being just 1 hour west of Toronto, but yet far enough away from the hustle and bustle of the big city.  The proximity of our plant to highway 401 means our location is within close distance to a variety of cities, towns and villages in beautiful southwestern Ontario, appealing to a wide range of dwelling options for our employees from urban to suburban to rural.

The Position
Reporting to the Production Supervisor, the Production Operator operates within the DSM Animal Nutrition and Health (ANH) North American premix manufacturing processes including operation of related equipment and associated utility systems injury free in a proper and timely manner and in accordance with DSM Standard Operating Procedures.

The Challenge
  • Handle raw materials, transport from storage to charge bins, weigh ingredients and add them to Process Control System via micro bins or other means.  Operator will be required to operate an automated & manual packaging line, including bagging and stacking of goods. Operator must also be able to operate an on line labeling system and print and apply required labels for production.
  • Monitor all manufacturing equipment and process parameters; record process conditions and actions as required in the DSM ANH/NA Operation Management System (OMS).
  • Report production disturbances to the Production Supervisor and inform him about process adjustments.
  • Take samples according to DSM Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Perform minor maintenance work on equipment when necessary to ensure continuous operation of process.
  • Take care of good housekeeping within area of responsibility, in compliance with cGMP, Quality (ISO 9001:2000), SHE and HACCP guidelines, orders and instructions.
  • Must understand and comply with DSM SHE Lock Out Tag Out Try Out (LOTOTO), Confined Space, Dust Explosion, Forklift, Respirator, Warehouse training and any other Quality and / or Safety, Health, & Environment (SHE) ,training provided
  • Warn offenders and inform the Plant Manager / Production Supervisor if and when instructions are not complied with.
  • Support the Plant Manager or Production Supervisor in investigating asset utilization issues.
  • Examines finished premix products to determine consistency and blend characteristics for future production continual improvement opportunities.  Recommends improvements to premix product appearance, flow and packaging
  • Samples products according to Operation Management System Quality Control Procedures.
  • Assist Shipping and Receiving personnel as required.
  • Monitors warehouse inventory stock levels to ensure continuous production.  Perform inventory cycle counts per direction from Plant Manager or designee.
  • Performs regular safety inspections and makes recommendations for improvement. Takes part in monthly safety meetings.
  • Checks calibration of scales daily and maintains records.
  • May perform training of other DSM production operators /temporary employees as instructed/directed by Plant Manager.
 
The Ideal
  • 12 years high school or equivalent. Minimum 6 months related experience preferred.
  • Good reading and writing skills are a must.  Ability to perform basic math.  Good communication skills required.
  • Ability to operate computers/terminals/scanners.
  • Must be able to operate forklift.
  • Knowledge of and adherence to and including enforcement of DSM Corporate policies addressing Safety, Health, and Environmental requirements.
  • Knowledge of and adherence of all cGMP, Quality (HACCP and ISO9001:2000 requirements.
  • Ability and desire to learn and change as required by regulatory concerns and or issues.
