Position Title:  Business Development Manager
Department: Business Development Operations
Reports to: Regional Director, Business Development
Office Location: 2 Roles: Waterloo and London
Status: Fixed Term (12 months)

 
Position Summary
The goal of the Ontario Centres of Excellence (OCE) is to deliver programs supporting industry- academic collaboration, academic-linked start-ups, talent development, youth entrepreneurship and other areas defined by our partners, leading to successful technology commercialization and economic development in Ontario. The Business Development Manager has the prime responsibility for field delivery of these programs.

Key Responsibilities
  • Identify and interface with OCE’s industry academic partners. This involves outreach, identification of key players and challenges; capturing information i.e. capabilities, grants, linkages, industry engagements; establishing an engagement plan; and providing metrics and outcomes for internal strategy and reporting.
  • Develop and execute engagement plans with industry and academic partners. This includes collaborating with other industry partners, academic institutions and researchers; linking with alternate recourses such as other funding sources; linking to appropriate Industry Academic Collaboration Programs (IACP) and OCE Centre for Commercialization of Research.
  • Identify and develop commercialization opportunities in the form of technology and knowledge transfer, technologies for further development and spin-off companies.
  • If identified as an account prime responsible for interfacing with OCE academic institutions, establish and execute an engagement plan including OCE outreach; capturing academic information i.e. Principle Investigators, grants, projects, etc.; providing metrics and outcomes for internal strategy and reporting; managing review meetings; coordinating and creating awareness of other business development activities, marketing and outcomes.
  • If identified as an account prime responsible for engaging and supporting Regional Innovation Centres (RIC), facilitate  OCE outreach; capturing regional information i.e. industry, academia, integrating with RIC teams; establishing and executing engagement plans; providing metrics and outcomes for internal strategy, reporting and RIC teams.
  • Actively engage in OCE teams, potentially in a leadership role, i.e., for Strategic thrusts, Planning, Programs, etc.
  • Manage program portfolio engagements and projects including budgets, assessment and review, metrics, outcomes assessment and success stories; and day-to-day aspects of working with stakeholders and stakeholder interactions.
  • Identify, develop and manage outcomes and prepare potential OCE success stories, working in conjunction with the Marketing and Communications group.
  • Organize, coordinate, and act as a project manager and/or participant in networking events, business associations, technical committees and professional organizations with a goal to connect those with technological needs and wants with technology developers and providers.
  • Act as an ambassador of OCE including formal presentation of OCE programs and capabilities as a keynote or invited speaker or panel member to relevant events while providing information on event statistics and outcomes.
  • Maintain and develop knowledge of OCE, sector and industry news and contacts, keeping abreast of current knowledge of regional industries, and sectors, including current events, regulatory issues and key contacts.
  • Provide coaching and mentorship to other OCE Business Development Managers, Program Delivery, OCE colleagues, entrepreneurs and students involved in OCE programs. 
     
Skills and Requirements
  • A post-secondary degree in a professional field.
  • Minimum of 5 years related experience, preferably in a technical product development, product management or sales positions.
  • Previous experience in advanced manufacturing technology is an asset.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Superior project and time management skills.
  • Familiar with language and terminology of industry, finance, government and the academic community.
  • Strong analytical and interpretive skills and capabilities in MS Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
  • Proficiency with databases, web searches, with ability to learn new software applications.
  • Ability to form and maintain good working relationships with diverse stakeholders.
  • Consummate professional, able to represent the organization in all circumstances.

Working Conditions
  • Standard office hours, although there will be participation required in non-office hour events such as networking meetings, workshops etc.
  • Travel within the designated region.  Business Development Managers spend 60-80% of their time outside the office.
