Job Description
JOB OVERVIEW:
Receives payment for customer purchases, ensuring that the appropriate procedures are
applied and that the customer has been treated in a friendly and efficient manner.
ACCOUNTABILITIES:
1. Demonstrate and encourage RONA Values in all decisions and actions.
2. Prepares cash terminal and cash area prior to start of shift, greets
customer and processes purchases in a friendly and efficient manner,
requests assistance as required to bag merchandise, perform price
checks, assist with lineups and carry-outs, ensures cash area is kept
neat and well-stocked with the appropriate forms and bags, etc.
3. Operates cash terminal to process the sale, refund or merchandise
credit. Checks extensions and verifies method of payment. Processes
payment as per procedure and secures authorization. Completes and
attaches all required paperwork.
4. Demonstrates an understanding of cash policy and procedures, is able
to apply the various procedures with comfort. Questions any
deviation from policy and secures appropriate authorization.
5. Balances till at the end of shift. Separates and counts float. Compares
actuals to tape reading and investigates discrepancies. Refers difficult
situations to Supervisor.
6. Performs work in a security-conscious manner. Takes action to
prevent theft including checking purchases for concealed
merchandise, requesting proof of purchase, following procedures, and
requesting supervisory assistance as required.
7. Demonstrates good interpersonal skills when dealing with customers
and co-workers.
8. Follows all RONA policies and procedures as outlined in the Employee
Handbook, National Health & Safety Guide, Code of Ethics, and other
corporate communication.
9. Follows safe work practices, obtains equipment certifications, and uses
personal protective equipment whenever necessary.
10. Performs other duties such as telephone reception and filing as
required.
SKILLS:
• Position requires ability to operate a cash terminal and related
pieces of equipment such as a calculator, credit card imprinter
and terminal.
• Position requires good mathematical skills and basic
understanding of cash balancing procedures.
• Manual dexterity and eye/hand co-ordination is required.
• Position requires good communication and interpersonal skills to
deal with co-workers, customer and handle difficult customer
situations.
EFFORT:
• Position requires close attention to detail entering in numbers,
counting and balancing.
• Position involves some stress associated with dealing with irate
customers.
• Position requires standing for extended periods of time.
Movement at times is confined to a small and restricted work
area.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
• Work environment contains minimal risks or discomforts, some
exposure to changes in temperature because of location of work
area.
• Handling of plants, chemical products, products which may
have a strong odor, etc.
