SOCIAL PLANNING ASSOCIATE

Length:  Temporary Full-time (3 positions, for approximately 15 months)

Hours of Work:  35 hours per week

Salary: $66,320.80 – $82,901.00 per annum/$36.44 – $45.55 per hour

Location:  99 Regina Street South, Waterloo

Description of Duties:

Provides social planning, policy development, community capacity building, and program administration leadership and support to all areas of Social Services. Assigns and oversees the work of students and consultants contracted to assist with research, training and development, data entry, and graphic design.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required: 

 
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Municipal and Provincial social service programs and related legislation; interrelationships between various levels of government, public administration, social planning, community development, and program administration; thorough knowledge of factors affecting social well-being and quality of life, including issues of access, homelessness and preventative services and programs, acquired through a Master’s Degree in Social Work, Social Planning, Community Psychology, Social Policy, or Human Service Administration, plus progressively responsible experience in a social services or related field.
 
  • Research, analytical, organizational, and problem solving skills in order to create project goals and objectives; develop work plans; make systematic and rational judgments, based on compilation and analysis of relevant information; schedule and organize events. Demonstrated ability to take a broad view of issues, events, and activities and to perceive their longer term impact or wider implications.
 
  • Leadership, facilitation, negotiation, and human relations skills in order to manage, develop, motivate, and support staff in achieving objectives; build consensus and communicate effectively within a diverse service group; develop joint programming with community partner agencies; and participate as an effective team member.
 
  • Computer skills with ability to use database systems; software programs, such as Word and Lotus Notes; as well as the Intranet and Internet.
 
  • Ability to read and interpret Provincial and Federal legislation, guidelines, and direction; Regional policies and procedures; government and community publications; budget and financial statements; statistical information; contracts; and proposals, in order to obtain and provide current data.
 
  • Ability to compose and prepare policies, procedures, and guidelines; reports; articles; service plans; and correspondence, in a clear and concise manner, requiring the compilation, summarization, and organization of data and research findings.
 
  • Ability to participate in news conferences and respond to media inquiries; present proposals and reports; and to make presentations to departmental and Regional staff, including senior management Council and Committee, community groups, and other organizations.
 
  • Ability to travel to various locations within the Region.
 
  • Ability to support and project values compatible with the organization.
