Data Centre Technician

CCS is the central IT department on campus, providing IT infrastructure and central technology services to the U of G community. CCS is committed to its core values: service culture, integrity, individual leadership, teamwork, agility and communication.

Reporting to the Manager of Systems Management in CCS, the incumbent will be responsible for maintaining the data centre environment and ensuring all server environments are secure, operational, and highly available through continuous proactive monitoring, customer support and scheduled maintenance preparation.

Primary duties and responsibilities include: building, upgrading, configuring, provisioning and installing servers spanning several different platforms and configurations; performing basic monitoring, troubleshooting and repairing all aspects of servers, operating systems and hardware; responding to impacting events; upgrading and downgrading servers including removing hardware from server environments; monitoring all electrical, mechanical and emergency generator systems and reporting issues as appropriate; performing routine maintenance activities on server environments; and assisting and participating with CCS systems management team of analysts in the planning of server environments and other data centre related projects.

Requirements of the position include: Two year college diploma in computer engineering technology or computer system technology and at least two years relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Additional industry certifications or designations are desirable (i.e. Redhat certified systems administrator (RHCSA), VMware VCP data centre virtualization, Microsoft MCITP or MCSA enterprise administration on Windows 2008 and Cisco certification network associate (CCNA)). Additional requirements include: strong knowledge of server operating systems including Microsoft Windows, Redhat Linux and VMware ESX; experience and understanding of storage principles including troubleshooting SAN technology and operating system disk management; knowledge and experience of file systems and the ability to perform data recovery; basic knowledge of network protocols, principles, and concepts including the ability to troubleshoot local connectivity issues; ability to follow defined operational standards, understand data centre critical infrastructure and server operating systems; strong communication skills (verbal and written) as well as professional phone etiquette; and demonstrated ability to prioritize work in a fast paced, high pressure environment.
