Position Title Temporary Natural Area Technician
Position Overview

 

Responsibilities
  • Conduct site visits to natural areas across Kitchener in order complete baseline inventories and mapping of existing populations of invasive species.
  • Use handheld GPS unit or portable computer tablet device to record/map invasions as well as other details regarding types and  impacts to natural area health.
  • Monitor and take inventory of other natural area indicator species including species at risk.
  • Perform regular data entry tasks including transferring field notes into Microsoft Access database.
  • Assist with the development of public stewardship programming which includes the design and delivery of invasive species control programs, restoration initiatives and other habitat improvement projects.
  • Assist with the development of reports, factsheets, webpages and other communication tools as well as the delivery of educational programs and initiatives including landowner and public outreach.
  • Other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
  1. Must be reliable with good attitude and employment record.
  2. Must successfully complete a medical examination if required.
  3. Must have the ability to support and project values compatible with the organization.
  4. Must have a completed at least a 2 year diploma in a related field (e.g. Biology, Ecology, Environmental Studies). 
  5. Must have a minimum of 1 year of related work experience.
  6. Must be self-motivated and adaptable with the ability to work independently under minimal supervision.
  7. Strong knowledge of local flora and fauna species, especially common invasive species.
  8. Must be able to read and interpret aerial\field maps and use a compass\GPS unity to navigate on and off trail and mark field locations. 
  9. Must have strong computer and field skills including detailed note and record keeping.
  10. Ability to interact with the public in a professional manner.
  11. Demonstrated ability to plan, organize and implement projects.
  12. Must be willing to work outdoors in all types of weather and field conditions for prolonged periods. 
  13. May be willing to work some evenings and weekends during public stewardship and education events.
  14. Must have a MTO Class G Driver’s license in good standing and access to a personal vehicle for City business.
