Job Description

PUBLIC HEALTH NURSE (VACCINE PREVENTABLE DISEASE)

Length:  Temporary Part-time (for up to 13 months) (0.6 FTE)

Hours of Work:  Up to 21 hours per week

Wage: $33.52 – $46.75 per hour

Location:  99 Regina Street South, Waterloo/150 Main Street, Cambridge

Description of Duties:

Provides Public Health Nursing services in the delivery of Infectious Disease, Dental & Sexual Health programs, specifically Vaccine Preventable Disease, in accordance with the Ontario Public Health Standards and Protocols and consistent with the mission, vision, values and strategic directions of Public Health (PH). Works regular evening and occasional weekend hours; during peak communicable disease activity, performs on call duties for designated weekend and holiday hours.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required: 
 
  • Must possess current Certificate of Competence as a Registered Nurse with the College of Nurses of Ontario and a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing including preparation in Public Health Nursing, or a Diploma of Public Health Nursing (as per HPPA amended 1997). Current CPR certification, immunization for Hepatitis B (or proof of immunity), and annual influenza vaccination required.
 
  • Thorough knowledge of communicable disease control, principles and practice of immunization and related public health issues affecting the population and principles of communicable disease control issues. Knowledge of the strategies related to the reduction in incidence of these diseases. Thorough knowledge of outbreak control measures and infection control measures. Thorough knowledge of vaccines, immunization schedules, contraindications to vaccination and management of adverse vaccine reactions including anaphylaxis. Ability to apply relevant health status data.
 
  • Working knowledge of health promotion and community development strategies; current trends in community health; research and evaluation methods including critical analysis of journal articles and research papers; skill in conducting needs assessments and literature reviews; creative abilities in providing innovative health promotion activities in a variety of settings.
 
  • Thorough knowledge of assessment and history taking and clinical skills in all types of injections (intramuscular, subcutaneous, intradermal), venipuncture, and specimen collection. Working knowledge of the nursing process and nursing theory and adult learning principles.
 
  • Skill in health counselling, telephone consultation, investigation, group process and facilitation. Proven public speaking and interpersonal skills in order to counsel and advise and facilitate learning by individuals, or various sized groups of children, adults, school staff, physicians, and other health care professionals, parent/caregivers, and community members. Ability to provide non-judgemental services to clients, regardless of sexual orientation, life-style practices, or ethnic background. Ability to participate as an effective team member within a multi-disciplinary team. Ability to support and project values compatible with the organization.

  • Knowledge and experience in the use of a personal computer for data entry, case management, electronic medical records, and document preparation, as well as skill in Internet-based searching and networking.
 
  • Ability to travel to various locations within, and occasionally outside the Region.
 
  • Ability to communicate complex technical information, educate and express ideas clearly and concisely to clients of all ages and cultural groups, physicians, other PH staff, health care providers and other groups; ability to alter language to suit audience.
 
  • Ability to write clearly using appropriate format and language for reports, policy and procedure manuals, business letters, pamphlets, clinical records and other documents; synthesize data/literature from various sources to write documents, reports or proposals.
