The Department of Physics and Astronomy is a moderate-sized, research-intensive department in Western's Faculty of Science. The Department houses both undergraduate and graduate programs in physics, medical physics, astronomy, and large undergraduate physics laboratories. The Department is home to approximately 30 full-time faculty members, with most engaged in externally-funded, theoretical or laboratory-based scientific research.
 
The Technical Specialist will apply their expertise and knowledge to support Researchers in the design, development, modification, commissioning and fabrication of electrical equipment, circuits or other parts required to support their research, a project, and/or laboratory or other campus setting.  The Technical Specialist will be responsible for ensuring all engineering aspects are sound and that designs meet all associated design criteria and specifications, and will set up, install and maintain electrical equipment, and complete upgrades.  The incumbent will provide training and expertise regarding equipment and instrumentation, and ensure functionality of complex electrical equipment is maintained through the provision of hands-on technical support, troubleshooting and repair.  The incumbent will also provide supervision, support and guidance to students regarding research project design, and on approaches to utilize required equipment and tools to ensure timely, innovative and reliable research and/or project outcomes are achieved.
 
Qualifications
Education:
-   Undergraduate Degree in Engineering (Electrical or Physics)
-   Professional Engineer License is preferred

Experience:
-   3 years' experience in a manufacturing, research, or laboratory setting specializing in Electrical Engineering
-   Previous work experience on multiple large and small scale research projects is preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
-   Familiarity with project management methodologies
-   Knowledge of complex electrical systems, electrical components, circuit operation, electrical theory, technical characteristics and multiple design elements
-   Knowledge of blueprints and technical drawings
-   In-depth knowledge related to troubleshooting, diagnosis, and repair of electrical, and electronic devices
-   Knowledge of high-frequency electronics, data acquisition, digital and analog design, and high-volume data management
-   Ability and willingness to support the electrical design and development for a diverse range of research areas and interests
-   Proficient at operation of standard electronic equipment such as oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, network analyzers, etc.
-   Ability to collaborate across internal and external boundaries to meet common objectives, improve outcomes and support work beyond one's own unit
-   Communication skills to describe technical concepts effectively to both novice and sophisticated users
-   Ability to write clear, concise and accurate procedural documentation
-   Ability to work in a manner that models best practices in confidentiality standards
-   Ability to apply creativity, innovation and resourcefulness to daily work
-   Detail-oriented with an ability to function and process information with high levels of accuracy
-   Ability and willingness to stay abreast of technological developments
-   Commitment to ongoing professional development with a desire to take on new challenges
-   Ability to work within a flexible schedule to accommodate the University's events and activities
-   Ability to provide guidance, support and feedback in a way that is positively received
-   Computer skills with the ability to learn and use relevant software, applications or equipment that achieves required outcomes for the facility, laboratory or project
