Job Description

Presstran Industries, a division of Magna International located in St. Thomas, Ontario, has developed an enviable reputation as a supplier to the automotive industry known for the high quality of its product and the excellence of its service. Presstran's lines of automotive stampings and welding assemblies are used in front motor compartments, underbody structures, truck frame components and front and rear suspensions as well as non-automotive applications
 
The Stamping Area Leader is responsible to ensure all requirements associated with the successful fabrication of product. This is facilitated through Production Lead Hands and manufacturing personnel on more than one shift. The Area Leader oversees the manufacturing operations and supports management, other Area Leaders, and production personnel by acting as a liaison in matters regarding policy application, employee relations, and continuous improvement for processes and productivity. This position carries direct and/or indirect supervisory responsibility for approximately 60-100+ employees.
 
REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

1.             Equivalent to completion of high school and a minimum of 5 years of leadership experience.
2.             Certificate from a post-secondary institution in a related field considered a definite asset e.g. Industrial Relations
3.             Must possess human relations skills and maturity of judgement
4.             Must possess time management, leadership, communication, organizational and presentation skills
5.             Skill gained by experience - over 5 years
 
DUTIES:
  1. Establish and maintain effective communications/interaction with all other Departments, including but not limited to engineering, quality assurance, maintenance, HR and material control support groups in order to achieve established targets.
  2. Conduct all business activity in a professional manner consistent with the positive leadership practices of building trust, empowerment, and competitiveness, with emphasis on personal responsibility.
  3. Plans and directs the utilization and use of all equipment and manpower to achieve the most effective results.
  4. Be responsible and accountable for meeting Presstran and departmental targets and goals
  5. Monitors and adjusts inventory balances as required, investigates inventory problems and implements solution to source.
  6. Participates in personnel requirements planning, overtime scheduling, co-ordinating lay offs, etc.
  7. Co-ordinates preventative maintenance with tool room/maintenance depts. and production planner
  8. Promotes/recommends continuous improvement suggestions including environment, people, processes and equipment/machinery and ensures departmental CI's are implemented.
  9. Co-ordinates the movement of quarantine material/parts/scrap upon disposition by material buyer/quality assurance
  10. Follows and adheres to requirements of current customer quality and environmental management systems standards
  11. Supports supervisors in compliance with:   the Presstran Health and Safety/Ergonomic/Environmental  program/procedures; the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulation for Industrial Establishments and other relevant Codes and Standards; and participates in performing regular workplace inspections; ensures corrective actions;   leads investigation in serious/critical incident/accidents
  12. Proficiency in Microsoft Office (specifically Excel, Word)
  13. Ensures fairness to direct reports, and encourages and participates in the Open Door Resolution Process for employee relation issues
  14. Teach, coach and mentor Supervisors for succession planning and enhancement of Leadership knowledge and skills
  15. Effectively builds and fosters teamwork within the department
  16. Performance Management - teaches, coaches and mentors employees to meet company expectations.
  17. Conducts performance appraisals informally or formally as required and ensures performance appraisals are completed for all employees
  18. Ensures employees are trained or certified, as required and participates in training programs as required
  19. Participates in the monthly Departmental meetings.
  20. Develops and maintains peer relationships
 
EQUIPMENT and/or PRODUCT FAMILIARITY:
Equipment:  PC, various press shop machinery/equipment, personal protective equipment, lift truck, printer,                                                   
Keyboard, telephone
Software:     AS400 reporting software, visual plant, Microsoft Office, etc.
Product:       Heavy stamping "details", various lubes/oils
 
RESPONSIBILITY AND WORKING CONDITIONS:  Under the general direction of the Stamping Department Leader, the incumbent confers regularly with inside contacts. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, are required for the collection/exchange of information. The supervisor is exposed to elements such as noise/temperature.
