Reporting to the Manager, Aboriginal Resource Centre (ARC), the Aboriginal Liaison is a strategically important position that directly contributes to the recruitment, persistence and retention of Aboriginal learners. The incumbent acts as the primary contact for prospective and incoming Aboriginal students and their families seeking counselling in admissions and transition support. Responsibilities include: traveling as a member of the Aboriginal Post-secondary Information Program, presenting information to prospective students, parents, teachers and secondary school officials; participating in the Ontario Universities’ Fair and assisting with on-campus recruitment events (e.g. Fall Preview, Campus Days, Interaction Conference); responsible for building relationships with First Nations and Aboriginal communities and organizations, Post-Secondary Counsellors, Guidance Counsellors and Elementary, Secondary and Post-Secondary staff; researching, planning, developing and implementing programming, resources and services for Aboriginal students making the transition to post-secondary education, including students from kindergarten to grade 12 (e.g. EAGLE, START Aboriginal, Aboriginal Student Handbook). In addition, the Aboriginal Liaison is responsible for maintaining statistics and preparing reports on recruitment, engagement and transition activities.

Requirements of this position include: an undergraduate degree in Humanities, Social Science, Aboriginal Culture, Social Work or Higher Education and one year relevant experience working with Aboriginal groups, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Additional requirements include: knowledge of Aboriginal cultures, counseling, student development, and transition and retention theories; understanding of the complexity of student identity and education issues, particularly as they pertain to Aboriginal students; demonstrated excellence in verbal, written communication and interpersonal skills; analytical and creative thinking skills; and the demonstrated ability to empathize and communicate effectively in an Aboriginal or cross-cultural setting. Must be available to work select weekends and evenings. Extensive travel throughout Ontario and a valid Ontario ‘G’ class driver’s license is required.
